It's my favorite time of year in the city!
Temperatures are getting cooler, and there's the smell of fall in the air.
We're switching gears from baseball (no October for the Yankees) to football (go
UT) and so have been scrambling to find a cable package that carries Texas
football. Some things never change.
On the Broadway front haven't seen all that much.
But did just see Young Frankenstein. It was amusing at times, but not
anything I'd recommend unless you're a huge fan of the movie. And then
really I'd just say Netflix it instead. We did see the new revival of
South Pacific and it was absolutely magical. This is the second time we've
seen Kelly O'Hara and she's fabulous. The perfect Nelly. Nothing
else on the horizon that I particularly want to see. Although Elton John's
newest might be worth it.
Spent a couple of weeks in August traveling up the New
England Coast. It was a wonderful trip. Started in Newport exploring
all the old mansions. What a lifestyle that must have been.
Discovered quahogs --although I'm probably spelling it wrong. Literally it
means big clams. But in this instance was referring to a dish often called
"stuffies". Basically it's a bread, clam and chorizo mixture baked in a
clam shell with the consistency of dressing. Absolutely fabulous!
Had it twice. Once in Newport and another round just outside Newport at
this wonderful dive with fantastic fried clams. Anyway, have the
recipe, but suspect they won't taste as good here in Manhattan. From
Newport we drove to Plymouth and had a marvelous time exploring Plimouth
Plantation (the recreation that is). It's a great place to visit.
Similar to what they've done at Jamestown and Williamsburg. We learned all
kinds of interesting things. Spent the whole day there.
From Plymouth on to Portsmouth NH, by way of Salem.
Was very disappointed in Salem. Just a huge tourist trap. Although
we thought nearby Marblehead was gorgeous. Portsmouth has a lovely
downtown area. And I had magnificent Lobster Ravioli at a little Italian
place. My first New England lobster. We shopped and walked and had a
lovely evening, and then the next day set out for our final destination. A
week in Boothbay Harbor. FABULOUS place. We had a wonderful
time. The town is so beautiful, perched on the hillsides around the
harbor.
We visited shops and art galleries. Cooked our
very own lobster -- which we stupidly named and then felt guilty about. We
went candlestick bowling which is so hard it's unbelievable but great fun.
I even wore bowling shoes. Ate tons of seafood. Including
grilled garlic lobster and champagne lobster -- both so good I almost made
noises. We also went whale watching. Saw mienkes and finbacks.
So amazingly awesome. Even got to where I could spot the spouts on the
horizon. It really is a beautiful part of the world and I fully intend to
go back, as soon as possible!
On the writing front, I finished the first of my new
series. Am very excited about the whole concept. And am
pleased with the book. Hopefully you'll like it, too. I'm now hard
at work on the second book of the series. Look for all three books in the
summer of 2010.
I also was recently honored with a Golden Apple Award
from the New York City Romance Writers as Author of the year. There was a
lovely reception at the Havana club and we had a wonderful time.
Chris Keeslar one of my old editors was also honored as was Suz Brockmann for
career achievement. She's an amazing person and I was lucky enough to get
to meet her son, who was there to accept her award.
Here's a picture of the NYC President Elizabeth Mahon
and me at the award reception.
I'm also excited to announce that I'm teaching a class
on romance writing for the continuing education department at NYU.
This semester has been great so far. The students are fabulous. And
we're having a lot of fun. For those of you in the area, watch for next
semester's class. And of course I'll announce it here as well.

Actually I haven't read as much as I'd like to.
As always, while writing I abstain. But am looking forward to a bit of a
read before I get too deep into the next book. I did read Karen Rose's
latest. And enjoyed it. She writes a very scary read. And I'm
also looking forward to reading Christina Skye's new Draycott Abby book. I
love them all. And am so excited to have a new installment to read.
Emily Giffin has a new book out as well, and I'm looking forward to reading it,
too.

As always, write and let me know what you think of my
books, upcoming releases, or just writing in general. I love hearing from
you!!!! You can reach me at dee@deedavis.com Or by snail mail at P.O. Box 7231,
